Artist: Sonal Ramnath
Sonal began her career as Human Resources professional and shifted her focus towards painting after over 7 years of experience in the Hospitality Industry. She completed her Masters in Fine Art, Painting, in 2018 from Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California, USA.
Sonal explores culture and mythology through expressive portraits of her family and friends. Her repertoire has evolved over time to focus upon the narrative of the subject. She has a
thematic approach to building her body of work. While narrative becomes a primary focal point, she relies on color harmony, composition, expressive mark making, and textures that celebrate her characters. The compositions attempt to depict the emotional structure of the subjects and her art expresses the causality of her interactions with them.
She was born and brought up in India, and currently resides in Mumbai, India, with her husband and her daughter. She has done a Group show at The Stainless Gallery in New Delhi, India in
September 2017. In 2018, her painting Piya Baavari XVII was selected for the Annual Spring Show of Academy of Art University, San Francisco, CA, USA. In 2019, she won the Late Smh. Durgadevi Saraf Trust award for the Best Painting by a Female Artist at the 101st Annual Exhibition of the Art Society of India. Her painting ‘Introspection’ was displayed at the RJD Gallery, New York, in November 2019, in a show titled ‘Inside Out/Outside In,’ curated by Didi Menendez of the Poets Artists group in association with RJD Gallery and Dr. Elaine
Schmidt. Her latest Group Show ‘Storytellers’ was held at Flinders Lane Gallery, Melbourne, Australia, in March 2020, where she exhibited her painting ‘Sisterhood.’ A digitised form of ‘Sisterhood,’ along with the other works, will be carried aboard Astrobotic’s Peregrine Lunar Lander’s time capsule. This is the first commercial launch to reach the lunar surface.
“She reached for the stars and landed on the moon. ‘Sisterhood’ by Mumbai-based painter Sonal Relekar Ramnath is making an incredible voyage to the moon in the last quarter of this year. Part of The Peregrine Collection, it will journey through outer space in the company of works by 1,200 artists.”
- Ayesha Singh, in the newspaper The New Indian Express
Predominantly an oil painting artist, I like to explore culture and mythology through expressive portraits of my family, friends, and acquaintances with strong personalities. I like to explore the behavioral and psychological elements in ideologies and idols mentioned in the mythological literature. With a thematic approach to building work, I like to focus upon the narrative of the painting and rely on color harmony, composition, expressive mark
Making, and textures to celebrate the emotion and subject of my painting.
